Abstract
Habitat use data collected during the breeding season from 62 Brown-headed Nuthatch (Sitta pusilla) foraging areas were compared to data from 33 random areas in eastern Texas to describe foraging habitat. Analysis of variance and discriminant function analysis of data showed that Brownheaded Nuthatches selected foraging habitat with fewer hardwood trees and a more open grown pine overstory. Management for open mature pine sawtimber stands in which hardwoods have been controlled, and snags retained, should benefit the Brown-headed Nuthatch.
