Description

This research is in companion to another submitted research project titled "A Review of Media in Respect to Nature and Femininity," which this researcher also worked on. The purpose of this research is to examine pre-Renaissance and Renaissance works to see if the ecofeminist idea of women being linked to nature is true or not by looking both at the media wholesale and the characters in the media. This idea is being explored with an ecofeminist lens because ecofeminists espouse an ideology that explicitly links women/femininity and nature, either through a biological or social construction. The hypothesis is that women are linked with nature in pre-Renaissance and Renaissance poetic works. Four pre-Renaissance and Renaissance poetic works were read and graded on two scales: the Bechdel test and environmental grading scale of the researcher's design, as well as the characters being analyzed by two other scales of the researcher's design: the Feminine-Masculine scale and the Environmental Associations scale. The biggest issue with the data is that none of the works passed the Bechdel test (highest score being 2/4), nor scored higher than 5/18 on the environmental grading scale. The character analysis was more fruitful, but still showing little correlation between women and femininity. Future research will need to be done in order to collect more data to definitively prove or disprove the hypothesis, since only 4 works were examined.
