Note
This is a Roman copy of a Greek Classical period statue, likely modeled after a work by Pheidas or his disciples. This example depicts a bearded male figure standing in a reglazed posture, adorned in only a mantle draped around his waist. It was restored in the 17th century as Asklepios, featuring a serpent entwined around the staff in his right hand. It was also restored again in the 1890s and in 2008. The plinth (base), as well as both feet, parts of the drapery, nose, and upper lip are modern. This sculpture was acquired in 1728, though it was previously in the collection of Alessandro Albani in Rome. This statue is included in the Skulpturensammlung, part of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, in the Albertinum in Dresden, Germany.
