Note
This is a marble statue of Persephone in the Kore style, typical of Attic sculpture. The work is attributed to an Attic workshop operating under the style of Agorakritos, a pupil of Pheidias, and was known for his ability to capture fluid motion and realistic drapery. The Ionian chiton is characteristic of the Late Classical 'rich style'. In contrast, her heavy outer himation is wrapped around her waist and slung over her left arm. This piece represents a pivotal moment in Greek art, as the moved away from more strict idealism of the High Classical era and moved towards expressive and humanized showcases of deities. The work was discovered in Piraeus, Greece. This object is currently held at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, Greece.
