Note
This statue is a marble Roman copy of an original Hellenistic Greek work. The archetype is traditionally attributed to Doidalsas of Bithynia, deriving from a passage in Pliny the Elder’s "Natural History". This statue depicts the goddess of love, Venus, also known as Aphrodite, along with a small-winged figure Cupid, also known as Eros, who is her son. Aphrodite is half-kneeling with one hand resting on her shoulder with her right fingers in her hair. She is wearing a bracelet on her left arm, just above her bicep. Her gaze is towards Cupid as he engages with her. He holds an arrow in his left hand, broken at the palm. Cupid is indicating to his mother the exact spot he has decided to touch with said arrow. His other hand rests on Aphrodite's waist, wings tucked behind his back, and legs spread apart. This object is part of the Farnese Collection and is currently held at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples in Italy.
