Note
This is a marble statue of a young athlete, missing both arms and the lower legs. The weight of the figure rests on the left leg, an expression of a contrapposto stance. The head is slightly bent, likely to receive a wreath, probably made of metal, which the youth would have been holding in his right hand, ready to adorn it on top of his head. The muscles are clear and dynamically rendered. This is likely a copy or free work from the late 2nd century BCE after a piece made by Polykleitos in 440 BCE, a statue of the athlete Kyniskos. It was discovered in Eleusis, an ancient city in Attica, Greece, which was the most vital religious hubs of the ancient Greek world. This object is currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens, Greece.
