The scene shown here is the decisive moment in the myth of Orpheus. Following Orpheus's descent into the underworld to retrieve his wife Eurydice, he is allowed to lead her back to the living world on the condition that he does not look at her until they reach the light. At the threshold, Orpheus turns to check on her, and Hermes, who is the guide of souls, grabs Eurydice's hand to take her back to the underworld. The original Greek panel was likely part of a public monument in Athens. This Roman marble copy is currently housed at Naples National Archaeological Museum, Italy.
