Abstract
Photograph of research scientists aboard the R/V [Research Vessel] Alpha Helix examining the contents retrieved from an otter trawl. An otter trawl is a type of fishing net which is dragged along the seafloor to collect organisms. It has two heavy plates called "otter boards" on each side of the net to hold it open laterally and a weighted chain on the bottom of the net to make it sink to the sea floor. There appears to be marine vegetation among the contents of the otter trawl. A starfish can be seen in the hand of one of the researchers, pictured on the right side of the back row. This photograph was taken near the Miskito Cays, Nicaragua during the research expedition of Dr. John C. Ogden and his colleagues to Miskito Bank, Nicaragua aboard the R/V [Research Vessel] Alpha Helix from October 13, 1977 to November 18, 1977 where they studied various marine species including seagrasses, fish, sea urchins, and the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas).
