Co-occurring disorders among older adults

Marion A. Becker

Abstract

This training series offers a comprehensive overview for counselors on topics related to assessing and treating persons with co-occurring disorders. The curriculum is intended to help counselors increase their familiarity with these topics as they work to integrate their treatment program content to address both mental health and substance use disorders. The topics covered include: an overview of the issue, with prevalence rates, assessment issues, treatment guidelines, treatment models, and issues involved in creating a continuum of care. Populations covered include adolescents, older adults, persons in the criminal justice system, and women. Presented as a self-directed learning module, learners may take a "competency quiz" and download a certificate of completion. Continuing Education Credits (CECs) are available for licensed professionals. Available both on-line and on CD-ROM, each topic should take, on average, less than three hours to complete. Development of this curriculum was made possible through a grant from the Department of Children and Families, Suncoast Region.
