Robert Bickel poses with the animal whose name he entered in the contest to choose a mascot for USF. He chose the name brahman at the suggestion of his roommate, whose father was president of the Florida Cattlemen's Association. USF's nickname was the Golden Brahmans until the 1980s, when it was changed to the Bulls. The original spelling of the nickname was actually Golden Brahma. When USF found out the brahma was a type of Asian chicken, the name was changed to Golden Brahman.
