SUNSHINE SKYWAY BRIDGE
This section examines the historical and structural transformation of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, a critical transportation link across Tampa Bay. The original cantilever bridge, completed in 1954, stood as a testament to mid-20th-century engineering. However, the catastrophic freighter collision on May 9, 1980, which led to the collapse of a central span and the loss of 35 lives, marked a pivotal moment in Florida’s infrastructural history. The subsequent construction of the current cable-stayed bridge, completed in 1987, reflects advancements in design, safety, and resilience. Through these photographs, viewers are invited to explore the interplay between human ingenuity, environmental forces, and the evolving demands of public infrastructure.
